The word elegy derives from the Greek élegos, "funeral lament.”It was among the first forms of the ancients, though in Greek literature it refers to a specific verse form as well as the emotions conveyed by it. "I just, you know, do what poets do [which] is sit down in the morning and write," he said. In French, perhaps the most famous elegy is Le Lac (1820) by Alphonse de Lamartine.

Poet Robert Hass: An Elegy For His Younger Brother The former poet laureate reflects on his brother's passing in the new poem "August Notebook: A Death." her subject is still alive. "I just kind of wrote my way through what came to me.
