The New River offers some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the east. Water flows are in the lower range and water clarity is typically clear. Some anglers don’t mind fishing in the cold, others do. It has good numbers and some big fish (I know of fish up to 7 lbs).
The river does have some Class II and Class III rapids to navigate. As the summer progresses and water levels drop, smallmouth will trend towards feeding on top.
