The International Game Fish Association (the governing body for international fish records) lists the world record for this species as a dogfish of an incredible 11lb 10oz caught by Jacques Andre at Guerande, France in 2002. Who knows. Once it is ready to hatch the baby dogfish is between four and five inches long and can fend for itself.
There are other species found in UK waters which have the name dogfish associated with them, but they are relatively rare compared to the abundant lesser-spotted dogfish. No fish should be treated like this and the reputation of all anglers suffers when members of the public see this.Large lesser-spotted dogfish can be confused with the Most fish reproduce by releasing tens of thousands (in some species hundreds of thousands) of eggs into the sea. Dogfish can prove difficult to unhook when they are caught as they twist their body and tail around the angler’s arm, and their rough skin can cause painful abrasions. However, the dogfish is a member of the shark family, and does provide a dependable catch on days when little else is biting, especially as dogfish feed just as well in bright sunlight as they do at night. Spiny dogfish sharks (Squalus acanthias) are longtime residents of our coastal waters and, for many months of the year, one of the most available fish in the sea, and yet local anglers almost never fish for the infamous “horn dog.”These sharks hang out in schools that are almost always made up of individuals of similar size and sex.Still, since so few fishermen actually target spiny dogfish directly, most are caught by fall and spring anglers while bottom fishing for other species such as sea trout, sea bass, bluefish and tautog.Just the name “dogfish” is probably enough to turn some folks' stomachs away from eating these fish, while the thought that they are eating a “shark” might work on the mindset of others. I don't experiment like that anymore.

can you eat dogfish? Now some New England fishermen, chefs, and food sellers are teaming up to create a buzz around dogfish, to “rebrand it,” and present tasty dogfish recipes and economic arguments to help boost the ill-named white fish to help it compete with the big five: tuna, cod, swordfish, haddock and salmon. They lay much fewer eggs which are protected in cases, known as mermaid’s purses. Dogfish have a different method. Cooking Fish: Skinning a Dogfish ready for cooking and eating It can be used as any other fish.
This abundance, coupled with the small size of dogfish, means that anglers can at times see dogfish as a pest species when they repeatedly take baits mean for bigger and more highly regarded species.
These cases are several centimeters long and attach themselves to rocks or vegetation and protect the fish as it develops inside. But if they can get over those two hurdles, anglers might just find that the fish they’re catching by accident are just as tasty as those they’re actually trying to catch. It’s not usually necessary, but to enhance the opportunity of catching these sharks anglers can do a little light chumming by hanging a can of fish-flavored cat food over the side of the boat.Something else anglers need to be careful with are the inch-long spines in front of each of the two dorsal fins on the shark's back. However, there are other dogfish species referred to by the dogfish name which anglers rarely encounter. The best way to unhook a dogfish is to firmly hold its tail alongside its head (as the picture above shows) which prevents it from trashing around and allows it to be unhooked easily. However, the sheer weight of numbers means that at least a few will make it through to maturity. In areas where dogfish are numerous and anglers are fishing with rigs with multiple hooks a dogfish can be taken on every hook if a shoal descends on the area. Simple one or two hook flapping rigs with size 1/0 or 2/0 hooks presented on the seabed is all that is needed.
This weight is far in excess of the maximum size much of the scientific literature says this species can reach, but is listed on the IGFA website as the official all-tackle record. Occasionally dogfish will be sold in fish and chip shops or fishmongers under the name of sweet William, rock or rock salmon (probably to hide the fact they are selling the unappealing dogfish). The dogfish grows inside these cases for around ten months.
