The observations in this book are quite detailed, and I think if I were to travel to Malta, I would be able to use the book as a guide.

The country has an amazing history and had we not read this, we could not have appreciated or enjoyed our visit as much as we did.

I loved it and it was great to read about places that I was planning to visit or that I had visited & to reflect on how they have changed, if at all they have.

As it was published in 1893 I had no real expectations but as it was a free Kindle book I had absolutely nothing to lose. An informative book but very much a book written in another time when political correctness had not been invented and from that perspective it was unusual and a little humorous.Nevertheless well written by a man who clearly had his own agenda.Not a book about Malta to read in isolation.There are better books about Malta out there now. The first inhabitants were farmers, and their agricultural methods degraded the soil until the islands became uninhabitable. May be of interest to some readers , not really my cup of tea. The same author published the first history book in the Maltese language entitled Storja ta’ Malta Miktuba għall-Poplu (The People's History of Malta) in 1862. 1863 saw the publication of the first novel in Maltese, Elvira Jew Imħabba ta’ Tirann (Elvira, or the Love of a Tyrant) by the Neapolitan author, Giuseppe Folliero de Luna.

It's sometimes disjointed, sometimes a bit dry, but always informative and facinating. I was looking forward to reading this from an historic perspective as it was written in 1893.
